How numbers are counted

The rules behind every figure, and where providers differ.

Revenue numbers are only useful if you know how they are made. The full rules, provider by provider, are public on How we count. The short version:

  • Revenue counts before tax. The fee is what the provider kept for processing.
  • Net revenue is charges, minus refunds, minus fees. One-time sales count; they never count in MRR.
  • Refunds count on the day the provider reports them. A reversed refund or a won chargeback stops counting.
  • MRR is what subscriptions bill each month after recurring discounts, with yearly plans counted as a twelfth. Trials hold no MRR until they convert.
  • Past-due subscriptions keep counting while the provider retries the payment. Paused ones count as churn until they resume.
  • Other currencies are converted at the European Central Bank's rate for the day of each payment. See Multi-currency.

Show the math

Every figure in RevGlance, on a metric page, in an Ask answer, in an alert or through the API, links to Show the math: the formula as a tree, each part with its value, and the payments or subscriptions behind it. Export the rows as CSV to check them against your provider.

When a number looks wrong

  1. Open Show the math on the figure and find the rows that surprise you.
  2. Compare them with the provider's own records, and check the provider's rules in its integration guide.
  3. Still off? Tell us on the feedback board. A number that does not match is a bug we want to hear about.
